After competing for the top spots for the past several weeks, the top seven runners on the women’s varsity team and the top five for the men traveled to Matthews, North Carolina on September 23, for an early morning race! The team traveled the night before the race for extra time of fellowship and preparation for the race.
After the alarms buzzed on Saturday morning, breakfast was had, and the bus had left the hotel and finally found a parking spot, the runners were antsy as they awaited the start (and finish!) of the race. The fog still lingered over the lake, the dust and dew began to become evident on the shoes and spikes of all the runners; the race was about to start.
Every runner had a great race, some with incredible times like sophomore Jax Ledford, with a time of 17:20, and freshman Chloe Gilbert, who finished first for the women in a personal-best time of 20:46. Some runners had incredible finishes, like junior Ivy-Carter Young, freshman Spencer Young, and sophomore Rachel Lanter. Others experienced a great race, like first-year competitors, eighth-grader Katie Rudins. Seven out of the twelve runners achieved personal records!
You can see them compete again at Christ School on October 18 for the conference meet, and at Cary Christian School on October 27, for the state meet. We hope to see the Cross Country team continue in their athletic success as well as their advancement as a love-filled community of runners.
